Hooray for Friday and alcohol!
This week we are mixing it up a bit (pun intended) and making a drink in the blender. I recently came across a fantastic book from the Oklahoma Peanut Commission from the 1970’s that tries to put peanuts in EVERYTHING. So I was very excited when I saw this drink with peanuts in it.
- 1 can (5.33 oz) evaporated milk
- 3 T brandy
- 1/2 cup ground peanuts
- 3/4 cup milk
- 2 egg whites
- 1-2 T sugar
- cinnamon
- mint sprigs
- Place evaporated milk, milk, egg whites, brandy and sugar in blender container; cover.
- Blend on medium speed 30 secs. Stir in peanuts.
- Pour over ice cubes and sprinkle with cinnamon. Garnish with mint leaves. Serve immediately.
Now, if you are up on your drink mixing, you might recognize the classic Wisconsin Christmas Tom and Jerry at the heart of this crazy peanut thing. The only reason I recognized it is because my father-in-law makes Tom and Jerry’s for us every Christmas Day! But this blender version actually reminds me more of the Tom and Jerry’s my dad used to make for us when we were little, which was just Tom and Jerry mix thrown into a blender with ice cream (sans brandy, of course) and served like a shake.
Except, of course, for the peanuts.
“How is it?”
“It’s…gritty.”
“Gritty?”
“There are chunks. Really small ones, but still chunks”
“Ugh. So no good, then?”
“Well, I am going to drink all of it, so not that terrible.”
The Verdict: Gritty
From The Tasting Notes:
If you don’t like chunks in your drink, then don’t make this one. Tastes like a classic Tom & Jerry, but with peanuts floating in it. Might have been better with the peanuts blended it, or just using a scoop of peanut butter rather than peanuts. Or you could just forget about the peanuts entirely and use ice cream instead.
While I love your vintage cocktail tests, I love Tom’s hats more.
Man, I’ve got to get me some of those.
I like how you have Tom standing in front of a painting of peanuts for the taste test.
Do you drink (eat?) peanuts in your bottles of Coke? My husband’s family is from Texas and Oklahoma and that’s what he grew up doing. Personally, not me–Don’t like crunchy drinks unless it’s ice!
I think I’d rather just have a handful of peanuts to eat while drinking a smooth cocktail. 🙂
