Happy Fourth of July, Everyone! I hope you are all participating in – or planning to participate in – some fun today! Tom and I are just hanging out and relaxing today. Oh, and probably making up more of these bad boys:
And by bad, this time I mean really, really good.
These are Brownie S’mores!
This recipe for brownie s’mores comes from Betty Crocker’s Party Book, which was published in 1960 and is proof positive that not only is the brownie s’more a vintage idea,
…it is also an amazing idea.
Are you surprised? I sort of am. I mean, can you believe that the same mid-century test kitchens that brought us Spaghetti Subs could turn around and make such a fun dessert?
Well, maybe not the same exact mid-century test kitchen, but you get my drift.
The marshmallows were pretty fun and easy as well. A great job for kids, as long as you don’t mind a little colored sugar mess. Just dip the marshmallow in water…
…then colored sugar…
And you have a masterpiece that you can eat!
I have to admit, Tom and I sort of ate these before our grilled dinner was done. In fact, as soon as the fire was hot enough I was toasting marshmallows.
Yeah. One small hitch in the preparation. The brownies were too thin and soft to really hold up to any pressure when removing toasted marshmallows from the stick. So be careful! Next time I make these, I am making the brownies thicker!
Not that Tom is complaining.
Well, maybe one little complaint. He doesn’t like it when the marshmallow gets everywhere!
The Verdict: Amazing.
S’mores are good and really don’t need improvement, but this was a yummy variation. Especially fun with the easy colored marshmallows. Make your brownies a little thicker than recommended to avoid any crumbling of your luscious concoction. Or, like Tom, sandwich the whole brownie s’more between graham crackers for extra deliciousness.
Hope you have a great holiday!
Yum!
yay, I needed a kid-centric dessert for tonight — thank you!!! 🙂
MIND BLOWN! I want this in my mouth!
Oh my gosh!! those look sinfully good! was the hubster thrilled to be eating something other than chicken icecream, ham loaf molds, etc for a change? HaHa.. Those contest entries are hilarious. Happy 4th to you both. 🙂
OOOOOOOOH. I wish I had seen this yesterday. How fun.
I made my Flag Cake with red, white and blue tie dyed batter. The batter of a white, egg white based batter is split in three, and two are heavily dyed, one with red and one with blue. Then plopped onto the 14 (12) by 9 inch pan, alternated with the white and then swirled with a knife or spoon and baked. When cool, frost with white frosting and use blue berries for the Field of Blue (one quarter of the cake, in the upper left hand) and then stripes with halved strawberries. You can get about 3 full and one half strawberry stripes on an average quarter sheet cake. My family and friends expect this every year. SO good.
I would have made these brownies, too. People were ooohing and ahing that I had baked on a 103 degree day… but hey, we’ve got A.C. our power is back on and that’s what I do! Those marshmallows look SO cute.
