Tom just made one of these the other day, so I thought a cocktail re-run was in order. I mean, why mess with the best, right? Also – this original post is over a year old, so chubby baby pictures ahead!
Whew! Thank goodness another crazy week has finally come to an end!
This week our cocktail is very basic because…well, the ingredients are what we had on hand. And going out to buy stuff to make a cocktail is fine, but somehow I think it is a bit more fun when you make do with things you have on hand.
But maybe that is just because I am into adventurous cooking.

Notes
This cocktail is from the 1943 edition of The Joy of Cooking, which is a really great book. I am kind of embarrassed to admit that I didn’t own this book until it came in one of the recipe lots I bought on eBay. I actually didn’t even know it was going to be in there until I opened the box, so it was actually a nice surprise from eBay for once, unlike all those other times that I got screwed.
Doesn’t it look refreshing?
Drinking with a baby. It’s an art form.
“So, how is it?”
“I don’t know.” Tom looked at the baby. “What do you think?”
She looked at him and chewed on her hand.
Tom nodded, then turned back to me. “We decided it’s very good.”
The Verdict: Very Good
From The Tasting Notes:
This is the best gin-based drink I’ve had in a while. It is simple, but the level of citrus and sweetness really balances the taste of the gin. It is good as-is, but it would be interesting to try it with a bit of tonic water, too.
I just made this with the tonic water and a bit less gin. It is very good.
Baby is so adorable, love this site.
This sounds good. I’m interested in making my own grenadine as the bottled stuff has creepy food coloring. anyone tried any recipes for it?
This is a lovely drink. Hard to beat Ye Olde gin and juice! Alexandra, commercial grenadine is basically an artificial product today, but it was originally made with pomegranate, and I would think that a pomegranate syrup (more sweet than tart) would work nicely.
Kevin, thanks for your comment.
I knew I was shying away from grenadine for a reason!
Now that I know pomegranate is a vital ingredient I’m thrilled. It is so healthy. If i use it I’ll get all those anti oxidants. My cocktails will be like having a salad. A really nice salad that makes everything better….
