This is what happens when I let Buzz help pick the recipe.
“Oooh, make that one!”
“What, seriously? It’s just Grape-Nuts on broccoli.”
“YES! That one!”
So we’re having Broccoli with Crunchy Topping.
- 2 packages (10 oz. each) Birds Eye 5 Minute Broccoli Spears
- 1/4 cup butter or margarine
- 1/2 cup Post Grape-Nuts Brand Cereal
- Prepare broccoli as directed on package; drain.
- Melt and brown butter in small skillet.
- Stir in cereal and sauté until browned.
- Pour over broccoli; serve at once. Makes 3 cups or 6 servings.
That’s right… broccoli, butter, and Grape-Nuts. SPECIAL.
On the plus side, how hard can it be to screw up?
I mean, steaming broccoli, that’s practically idiot-proof.
Oh, wait, the butter’s all foamy. Does this count as something going wrong?
“This looks great!” That sentence wasn’t even feigned enthusiasm to convince the kids to eat it — he meant every word.
“… oh.”
“What’s wrong? It’s got butter, how bad could it be?”
“It doesn’t taste like anything. Just crunches.”
Verdict: Crunchy.
From his tasting notes:
Tasted like buttery Grape-Nuts on broccoli. Way, way too crunchy. It gets credit for having an absurdly accurate name, but there was no flavor — just texture. Disappointed.
Maybe it’s better if you can’t actually taste the Grape Nuts…Nice photo of this dish, but if those sauteed Grape Nuts had been bacon bits instead, then you would really have something!
Sautee Grape Nuts in bacon fat!
Might have helped flavor-wise, but it would still be crunchy and sad, I think!
Maybe add some seasonings like garlic salt and pepper to the Grape-Nuts.
I picked the recipe because I have always liked Grape Nuts. Their flavor after being fried was quite nice, although it didn’t really blend with the broccoli.
That pie recipe looks interesting. Grape Nuts ice cream is popular in my area of the country, and I tried it for the first time this summer. Maybe it’s just turning 40 making me feel old (and it is a popular flavor among the elderly populace), but it was pretty tasty. Then again, I never met an ice cream cone I couldn’t lick.
I blame the coloration of the sauteed Grape-Nuts myself. Look at that! That’s downright golden brown, it is! And with that texture, one could almost convince oneself that they look like bacon bits. Delicious, delicious bacon bits! But alas.
I think the problem was that they only gave you half a recipe. Pre-heat the oven to 400-425. Take steamed broccoli and put in a rectangular baking dish. Top with Grape Nuts and pour butter on top of that. Roast in the oven for 20 minutes or until the broccoli has become a bit sweet.
Tasting like nothing was very popular back in the day.
This is why when I worked in a supermarket in the ’90s so many old men would come through and buy a bottle of Frank’s Red Hot Sauce and nothing else.
