I laughed when I saw the second photo down of “Grilled SPAM With Stuffed Eggs”. At first glance it appeared people had taken bites out of the entire top row of SPAM, then put them back on the platter… like “Ew, these aren’t so good after all. Maybe no one will notice if I just… put… it back.”
I heart those recipe booklets. I collect mid century recipes books and I have to say my favourite are the American ones. They’re so much more kitsch than the ones here in Australia!
Gosh, I remember Dean’s dairy…haven’t seen or thought about it in decades. I also remember Spam…my friend’s mom cooked some in the electric skillet with BBQ sauce & served on buns and surprisingly it was good…the sauce probably masked the spam taste.
I have a few vintage cookbooks that I mostly collect for the cute graphics…the recipes, not so much.
Decorating details on food were so important back in the day. I assume because housewives had nothing better to than slice pimentos or cherries to decorate their Spam and lime jello molds. Plus, color lithography had come down in price so all those bright pictures could illustrates cookbooks.
They DO look like that!
