Holy Cow! The Worst Mid-Century Recipe Contest marches onward, and there are plenty of horrible recipes still to choose from.
Finalist #3 is a peach of a recipe from Sharon, aka Charm and Poise on Flickr, and the curator of the hilariously horrible group Gee, That Food Looks Terrible. Though her submitted recipe has blessedly few ingredients (and no gelatin), this baby is still a horror to behold. Sharon writes:
You people are all sadists! What is the matter with you?? Look at this thing. Disgusting. And you expect me to make it, and then cram it down Tom’s throat!?!? Well, let me tell you something!
It will be my pleasure. 🙂
I know what you are thinking. Where are the hard-boiled eggs? Where??
They were still in their little egg cooker. Not quite done yet!
Hooray! Dog food!
Dog food with an egg on it!
This looks disgusting, but was actually pretty fun to pat into the pan. The downside: Smelly corned beef hands. Yuck.
Mmmm…canned!
A whole lotta eggs, here.
And then….someone threw up on them.
The cooked crust looked pretty much like the raw one.
Filled with barf.
And, the reveal!!!
Good thing there is that sliced egg garnish. Really saves it from looking disgusting, let me tell you.
Okay, Sharon. Your suspicion is confirmed. The “filling” does NOT stay on the crust when served, and the dish is IMPOSSIBLE to serve neatly.
Gak.
The moment you have all been waiting for.
Down the hatch.
“Is it horrible????”
“Nah, not that bad. The texture in the center is gross, but it doesn’t taste bad at all. Salty, but not bad.”
I took my own bite. The only thing I could think of was…unecessary. I mean really. The sliced eggs in the center were ridiculous. They were slimey when covered with soup and added nothing taste-wise. Couldn’t there have been green beens, or broccoli or carrots or SOMETHING in the center BESIDES eggs???? Blah.
But other than that, it was edible. It just looked like barf on raw meat.
The Verdict: Not bad. Tom ate it. If you don’t like cream of mushroom soup, don’t try this. The eggs were totally stupid, but not gag-inducing. I feel sorry for the poor bride who tried to serve this to company. Yeck.
But, true to form, Tom ate almost the whole thing. So it wasn’t that bad!
Thanks for the hilarious recipe, Sharon! Stay tuned for Finalist #4 next week!
Well, at least you have a new dish to serve at your next dinner party!
Uggh…oh my lord. Something about the color of that filling with those eggs bobbing up and down in it. Yep, you pegged it with “barf”. And slimy eggs are definitely unnecessary in any dish. Sometimes, I wonder if people used eggs and green olives profusely as some sort of status symbol in the 50’s and 60’s.
I also feel bad that a slice of white bread had to die in vain.
Okay, I have to admit that I LOVE creamed eggs on toast/biscuits. But *this* recipe?? Cream of mushroom soup?? *gag*
You did get Tom to sign a release that he is a willing participant, yes? I’d hate to see you land in jail for spousal abuse.
Oh my good gosh it’s gray! how often do you see gray food? it makes my stomach turn just looking at it I don’t like certain textures to begin with this one makes my stomach crawl. Gross! How you stomached it I have no clue.
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the pic, someone barfed in the pan.
I can tell you why this had eggs in it – PROTEIN. They were huge on stuffing protein down you seventeen different ways back then.
I’ve seen every kind of “egg and rice, egg and pasta, egg and jello” recipe in the old mags. YECK.
Gak!!! The first thing I thought of looking at that ‘shell’ was bbbrrraaaaaiiiinnnsssssssss…..
*shudders*
Makes me think of when I was preggers with #1 and we had some ground turkey in the freezer. I made my hubby toss it cause EVERY time I saw itI would get sick cause it looked like a frozen brain in the freezer. And I STILL cannot eat ground turkey, LOL.
The eggs looked like weird eyes in gravy to me.
Sorry, could have gotten past the visual on this one either.
You two are very brave.
So, the fat kid in me thinks that meaty crust looks kind of delicious. But I like things like meatloaf and bubbles and squeak. Are there any recipes out there that involve a meat crust (maybe a non-canned meat crust) that aren’t totally disgusting? or filled with barf? Maybe noodles or vegetables that aren’t slimy??
Barf is definitely the accurate descriptor for that one. Acck! I am utterly amazed that Tom managed to cram that much of it down. Does he starve the first part of the week so that he’s actually hungry when meals like this are served??? Hehehe 🙂
Wow, this is a real doozy Sharon! This looks sooooo completely insane I can’t really wrap my head around what it must taste like. EEPS! I can definitely see why you picked this one Ruth! 🙂
All I can say is that your HB eggs were perfect! LOL!
I’m pleased to report that the book from whence this nightmare came and clearly never been cracked open. Somewhere, sometime, in some suburban home a husband was spared the sight of barf pie. And for that, I’m thankful!
Oh this is too funny. You had me laughing the whole way through. It doesn’t look that far from what some of us grew up eating, as our moms, enchanted with all that canned food goodness, tried to vary up the packaged mac ‘n cheese and frozen fishsticks with the occasional exotic dish topped off with cream of something soup. Hilarious! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
Guys! Thanks for all the comments! And the exclamations of horror. It soothes my soul, slightly.
Yes, Tom is the man with the iron stomach. No, he doesn’t starve himself. He will eat and has eaten almost anything, and will eat it until he is sick.
Sharon! I should make YOU come over so I can serve this to you! Ha ha! 🙂 I am also glad to hear this books wasn’t used often. It seems like a pretty scary thing to have around.
Kelly – Don’t worry about the bread. Tom gave it a good home. 🙂
Dr. JA – You should have seen his face when he saw it for the first time. Maybe I should start taking a “at first glance” picture too.
Chrissie – Closing my eyes helped. 🙂
Barbara – I totally know what you mean about protein gorging. I am currently scouring my grandmother’s illegible recipe collection looking for a Kehm family legend: The Baked Chicken Stuffed With Meatloaf. Now THAT is protein overload!
Lorie! Good call on the brains. Hmmm…maybe I should start keeping a closer eye on Tom…
Adriane – The crust actually wasn’t that bad. I think with a carrot, potato and cabbage filling it would actually be kind of good, as long as you didn’t care what it looked like when it was served.
Andrea – The foolish fool will eat anything! Anything, I tells ya!
Sara – Yeah, this one was totally crazy! 🙂
Sable – At least something looked good on that pile!
Lynn – You should see some of the scary stuff I have cooked up with those exact ingredients. *shudder* Glad you liked the post!
I am on holidays abroad, but have now gone to borrow a laptop just to look at this week’s menu… and I am not disappointed! I take my hat off to you, dear Sharon, this is VILE. Do I have to mention that I absolutely detest mushrooms? No, it does not really matter in view of the horror that is this slimey eggy … cant speak for fear of dinner coming up. BAH! Yet wonderful. Ah to be a bride in 1965!
This is a delightful series! I’m laughing hysterically at the whole project, the foods that were made mid-century, and your (Tom’s) bravery in attempting the recipes. Thank you!!!!
I am REALLY enjoying this! Love these old recipes. There is deeper meaning among them—I aim to find me some. Meaning, I mean.
Actually that looks kind of good. I have low standards.
Your husband is a BRAVE man! I would have stopped at the cream of mushroom soup!
